WVB: Gryphons Defeat Lakehead in Four Sets

THUNDER BAY, ON - The University of Guelph women's volleyball team defeated the Lakehead Thunderwolves 3-1 Friday night in Thunder Bay. Set scores were 25-23, 25-19, 21-25 & 25-22.

The first set saw the Gryphons fall behind early and were down 16-13 at the technical timeout. Lakehead continued to lead by three but Guelph made their move with a 6-2 run late in the set to win 25-23.

Set 2 was close in the early going with the Gryphons taking a slim 16-14 lead into the timeout. A 5-0 run later in the set allowed Guelph to win the set 25-19. The third set saw a poor start from the Gryphons as they fell behind 6-0 and they could never get closer than three, falling 25-21. In set 4, Guelph jumped ahead early at 5-2 but Lakehead battled back to tie it at 6-6. The Gryphons forged ahead 16-12 at the timeout and expanded the lead to eight points later, but had trouble finishing the set. Lakehead battled back and closed the lead to two points before a missed serve handed the set win to Guelph at 25-22.

Gryphons head coach Paul Funk stated, "We played well at times tonight but had two bad stretches at the beginning of the third and end of the fourth sets. Overall, the group was disappointed with how things ended and we feel fortunate to get the win. Cayte Wilson did a great job coming off the bench tonight getting our middles involved in the offence." Michaela Hellinga led the offence with 13 points (9 kills, 4 blocks) followed by Victoria Golebiowski with 12 (8 kills, 4 blocks) and Maddie Dedecker with 10 (9 kills, 1 ace) while Kayla McMullen contributed 11 digs defensively. The Gryphons are right back at it again Saturday when they finish the back-to-back against the Thunderwolves at 7pm.
