TORONTO – The Guelph Gryphons field hockey team is playing like a team with something to prove. The Gryphons produced another dominant performance in a 6-0 defeat of the McGill Martlets Saturday.
The red-hot
Kayla Magarelli scored a hat-trick for Guelph (6-1-2), which won for the fourth straight game. The Gryphons are second in the OUA standings behind the York Lions, who Guelph defeated 1-0 earlier in the week.
"We've played really well as a team lately, especially at an important point in the OUA season," said coach
Michelle Turley. "We want to continue to play as a cohesive unit and peak in these next few weeks."
Magarelli, who moved from midfield to forward because of a season-ending injury to
Katherine MacMillan, has been unstoppable of late, a key figure in the Guelph attack. The second-year player from Vaughn, ON had two goals and an assist in a 4-0 win over Waterloo, the lone goal of the game against York, and followed those performances up with three goals against McGill.
Magarelli opened the scoring early against the Martlets, converting a feed from
Olivia Finch to the back post of the McGill net for Guelph's only goal of the first half.
The Gryphons came alive after the break to reel off five unanswered goals. Finch scored a beautiful goal about six minutes into the second half, a hard shot that found the net, with
Danielle Crumpton and
Alice Stubbings picking up assists.
Magarelli would then score two straight to complete the hat-trick, the second of the two coming on a pretty redirect that sent the ball over the McGill goalie's shoulder.
"In the second half, we were a different team and came out firing on all cylinders," said Turley. "Everyone was involved. We strung together multiple passes between players from the backfield to the attack on each of the goals."
Kendra Puttick (her first of the season) and
Rebecca Plouffe also scored for the Gryphons, while Finch finished with a goal and three assists.
Next up is the Mental Health Awareness game when the Gryphons host the Western Mustangs on Wednesday Oct. 18 at Varsity Field at 8 pm.
