WVB: Gryphons Five-Game Win Streak Snapped By Nipissing

GUELPH, ON - The University of Guelph women's volleyball team had their five-game win streak snapped Sunday afternoon with a 3-2 loss to the Nipissing Lakers at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Center. Set scores were 21-25, 25-17, 25-23, 15-25 & 12-15. The first set was close early on with the teams exchanging the lead before Nipissing took a 16-13 lead at the technical timeout. A four point run later allowed the Lakers to win the set 25-21. Set 2 saw Guelph grab an early 3 point lead which they expanded later to win the set 25-17. The third set saw the lead change a number of times throughout but the Gryphons were able to hold on and take the set 25-23. In set 4, the Lakers jumped out to an early lead and a 7-0 run midway through the set allowed them to win easily at 25-15. In the fifth and deciding set, Nipissing jumped ahead early and led 8-5 at the switchover and were able to maintain the lead to win the set and the match at 15-12.

Gryphons head coach Paul Funk stated, "Nipissing deserved to win the match. They were more invested in the outcome in terms of energy and fight than we were. We had a chance to take control of the match at the start of the fourth set but we responded poorly. Hopefully, our squad learned something today about mental preparation and expectations." Victoria Golebiowski led the offense with 19 points (16 kills, 1 ace, 2 blocks) followed by Maddie Dedecker with 17 (14 kills, 2 aces, 1 block) while Kayla McMullen led the defense with 20 digs. The Gryphons next action is Friday when they travel to Thunder Bay to take on the Lakehead Thunderwolves at 7pm.
