GUELPH, ON - The Gryphons Field Hockey team is off to a perfect 3-0 start to their 2016 season after picking up a pair of wins on Sunday at their home field.
Gryphons Weekend Recap:
Game 1 (Saturday): Â W 7-1 over Waterloo
Game 2 (Sunday): Â W 4-3 over Queen's
Game 3 (Sunday): W 6-1 over Western
After picking up a win over Waterloo on the Saturday, the Gryphons were back on the field for a 9am matchup with Queen's on Sunday morning. The Gryphons were unable to convert early on despite generating several good scoring chances within the opening minutes of play against the Gaels. In the 9th minute, against the run of play, the Gryphons suddenly found themselves trailing 1-0 when Queen's second year defender Sophie Bombara. In the 23rd minute, the Gryphons would level things up when
Olivia Lane scored her third goal of the season to tie things at 1-1. Three minutes later, rookie
Kayla Magarelli would put the Gryphons in front 2-1. A back-and-forth opening half of play would eventually see the Gryphons take a slim 3-2 lead into the break.
Capping the first half scoring for the Gryphons wasÂ
Katherine MacMillan with a goal in the 33rd minute. She would score her second goal of the game, and third of the season, early in the second half to push the U of G lead to 4-2. It would end up being the game-winner as Queen's would get one more back but fall short as the Gryphons won it by a final score of 4-3.
The second game of the day saw the Gryphons pick up a 6-1 win over the Western Mustangs. Olivia Lane spearheaded the attack, scoring five of her team's six goals in the game. Before Lane's five goal outburst, it was actually
Rudi Ballard opening the scoring for the Gryphons with a goal in the opening two minutes of play. Defender
Rebecca Plouffe and midfielder
Libbie Pritchard both produced strong performances in the middle of the field for the Gryphons throughout the team's three contests on the weekend.
Up next for the Gryphons, a re-match of last year's OUA Final as they will face their rivals in the Toronto Varsity Blues. The Gryphons lost 4-3 to U of T in the OUA Championship game a year ago. The two teams will meet for the first time in 2016 on Saturday, September 24th when the Gryphons visit U of T for a 9am game.
