WINDSOR, ON - The University of Guelph women's volleyball team got their first win of the season with a 3-1 road decision against the Windsor Lancers Saturday afternoon.
Set scores were 25-19, 15-25, 25-22 & 25-21.
In the first set, the teams traded the lead a number of times early on, but an 8-0 Guelph run just after the technical timeout allowed them to win 25-19. In set 2, Windsor led early and then used a 4-0 run later to take control of the set winning 25-15. The third set saw the teams battle early on with the Gryphons leading 16-13 at the timeout. Guelph led 22-18 late before Windsor narrowed the gap to a single point. Guelph regrouped and found enough to win 25-22. Set 4 was almost a copy of the third with the Gryphons leading at the timeout, Windsor closing to within 2 at 19-17 but Guelph finishing the set at 25-21.
Gryphons head coach Paul Funk said, "We showed better fight today which was our goal coming in. Our execution at times wasn't consistent, but we made fewer errors overall and it was enough to get us our first win."
Maddie DeDecker was stellar offensively with 19 points (18 kills, 1 ace) followed by
Libby Donevan with 13 (8 kills, 1 ace, 4 blocks) and
Laura Duncan with 12 (9 kills, 2 aces 1 block).
Kayla McMullen contributed 16 digs defensively. The Gryphons next action is next Friday at Waterloo at 7pm.
