ST. CATHARINES, ON - The University of Guelph women's volleyball team got an important road victory Friday night in St. Catharines, defeating the Brock Badgers 3-0 . Set scores were 25-20, 25-21 & 25-20. The first set saw Guelph forge ahead early on and lead 16-11 at the technical timeout. Brock narrowed the lead to one but the Gryphons expanded the lead again and took the set 25-20. Set 2 was close throughout with the teams tied multiple times late in the set but a 4-0 run allowed Guelph to win 25-21. The third set had the Gryphons out to a 5-1 lead but Brock tied the score up at 9 apiece. Guelph immediately took the lead back and expanded it late and held on for the 25-20 win.
Gryphons head coach Paul Funk stated, "This was a big win for us. The team played with poise and didn't let a noisy crowd affect their focus. Aside from a small run at the end of set 3, we played steady and didn't put ourselves in a hole."
Maddie DeDecker led the offense with 12 points (10 kills 2 aces) followed by
Libby Donevan with 11 (7 kills, 1 ace, 3 blocks) while DeDecker also contributed 12 digs. The Gryphons wrap up their first half schedule next Friday when they host the Waterloo Warriors at 6pm.
