LONDON, Ont. – The biggest rivalry in OUA field hockey will add another chapter on Sunday, as the Toronto Varsity Blues and Guelph Gryphons will square off in the finals at the OUA Field Hockey Championship.
The two sides advanced after winning their respective semi-finals, with the Varsity Blues defeating Waterloo by a 5-1 score, while Guelph bested the host Western Mustangs 1-0.
The Gryphons lone goal of the game Saturday versus Western came from OUA MVP Olivia Lane who made no mistake, scoring her third goal of the OUA Championship Tournament after receiving a beautiful pass from rookie Alexa Corrado. The goal came in the 59th minute of play and would prove to be the only score of the game as the Gryphons held off the host Mustangs.
Guelph's win not only secured the Gryphons a chance at the OUA title, but granted them a spot at the CIS Championship, joining the host Varsity Blues, the UBC Thunderbirds, and the Victoria Vikes.
Sunday's matchup is certainly a familiar one, as it will be the 10th time in 12 years that the two sides have met with the banner on the line. Toronto will be looking to defend their title for the third consecutive year, with Guelph aiming to get back on top of the OUA mountain for the first time since 2013.
Overall, the two teams have combined for each of the last 12 OUA titles, with the Varsity Blues holding an 8-4 edge over that span.
Game time for Sunday's gold medal showdown is set for 3 p.m. at TD Stadium, with the bronze medal matchup between Waterloo and Western taking place at 1 p.m. Fans can catch both medal round gameslive on OUA.tv
