Box Score Guelph, ON - Sunday afternoon at the Gryphon Centre, the Gryphons women's hockey team won 3-0 over the Windsor Lancers in the 2nd Annual "Fight For Kevin" game. It also marked the final home game of the Gryphons regular season schedule. With the win, the Gryphons improve to 16-3-3 while the Lancers fall to 13-5-4.
Averi Nooren (Aylerm, ON) scored twice while
Stephanie Nehring (Oshawa, ON) recorded her fourth shutout of the season by turning away all 29 shots sent her way.
The opening period was a free-flowing affair with just one whistle being blown in the opening 10 minutes. Gryphons All-Star goalie Stephanie Nehring (Oshawa, ON) was called upon several times and stood tall to keep the game scoreless. With two minutes remaining the Gryphons would catch their break, as Averi Nooren (Aylmer, ON) would score her seventh goal of the year to give Guelph a 1-0 lead heading to the second period.
Half way through the second period the Gryphons would break out on a 3-on-2 that would end with a shot from in close from
Kaitlin Lowy (Toronto, ON). Lowy's shot would richochet off the crossbar and down, before Lancers' goalie Marissa Kozovski (Pickering, ON) was able to get her glove on it to keep it out. As the period went on, the game became eerily similar to Saturday's game with Western. Guelph would continue to get shots to the net but were unable to extend their lead as for the second time in as many days, they would head to the third period clinging to a slim 1-0 lead.
History would not be repeated thankfully for the Gryphons. They would continue to pour on the pressure in the 3
rd period, with the majority of the play in the Windsor end. With six minutes remaining, Kaitlin Lowy would be sent on a partial breakaway where she was able to corral the puck and get the puck to a trailing teammate in Averi Nooren who would fire home her second of the game and eighth of the season to put the Gryphons up 2-0. The Gryphons would add another just over two minutes later when
Rachael Cassidy (London, ON) would get a breakaway of her own, deking Kozovski and sliding the puck through her legs. Frustration would set in for the Lancers as off setting penalties would be called with three minutes remaining. The Gryphons would hold on to the 3-0 win.
The Gryphons will now head north for a pair of games to wrap up their regular season schedule. On Saturday, February 14
th the Gryphons will be in North Bay taking on the Nipissing Lakers (10-8-3). On Sunday, February 15
th the Gryphons will travel to Sudbury to battle the Laurentian Voyageurs with puck drop set for 1:50pm in the regular season finale.
Prior to the game, former Gryphon goalie Brooke Siddall (pictured above) was on hand for the ceremonial puck drop. Brooke's brother, Kevin, passed away from a rare form of Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma disease early in 2014. The Gryphons wore neon green tape (the colour universally associated with Non-Hodgins Lymphoma) and accepted donations on behalf of
The Childhood Cancer Research Association in support of the Sidall family.
