MBB: Big 1st Qtr Lifts Gryphons to 61-50 Win Over Lakehead

Box Score
Thunder Bay, ON - Saturday night in Thunder Bay the Gryphons Men's Basketball team won 61-50 over the Lakehead Thunderwolves to salvage a split in the weekend doubleheader between the two OUA Central Division rivals. Both teams now sit at 1-1 on the young season.

Friday night, the Gryphons suffered a heartbreaking, one-point loss to Lakehead. Saturday night proved to be a perfect outlet to release some of that frustration. The Gryphons came out flying in Game 2 of their weekend doubleheader versus the Thunderwolves, storming out to a 22-9 lead after the opening quarter of play. With the score 10-9 in favour of Guelph, the Gryphons would end the opening quarter on a 12-0 run capped by an Andrew Grant jump shot at the buzzer. The lead would grow to as many as 17 before the Thunderwolves were finally able to claw their way back into it.

Grant, who came off the bench on Saturday night, finished the night with a team-high 14 points to go along with 5 rebounds and 2 steals. The Gryphons and Thunderwolves will now go their separate ways after having seen more than enough of each other; dating back to last season, the Gryphons last five non-exhibition games have all come against Lakehead. Last season they played in a doubleheader to close out the regular season schedule before turning around and meeting again in the opening round of playoffs; that was followed by a weekend doubleheader to open the 2015-16 regular season. Time for a change. Enter the 5-time defending national champion Carleton Ravens.

The Gryphons will welcome the Ravens for their 2015-16 OUA regular season home opener on Friday, Nov. 13. Tip is set for 8pm at the W.F. Mitchell Athletics Centre.
