MBB RECAP: Gryphons Beat Windsor, Fall to Western in Opening Weekend of 2026-27 Regular Season

GUELPH, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons men's basketball team officially tipped off their 2026-27 regular season schedule with a pair of home matchups versus the Windsor Lancers (Oct. 23) and Western Mustangs (Oct. 24). The Gryphons picked up an impressive 21-point victory over the Lancers on opening night before falling on Saturday night to the Western Mustangs.

Game 1 – Friday, Oct. 23, 2026 | Guelph 102 – Windsor 81

After an impressive preseason, in which the Gryphons posted a 5-1 record, the regular season officially tipped on Friday night at home in front of a near capacity crowd of 1,400 fans at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre. The Gryphons put together a complete performance against Windsor, with fifth-year guard Eric Armstrong (New Hamburg, ON) pouring in a game-high 30 points on 10-16 shooting. The Gryphons shot 55% from the floor as a team, and pulled away in the 3rd quarter outscoring the Lancers 33-20 to take a double digit lead into the 4th quarter. Amare Hamilton (14 points, 2-4 from 3) and Isaiah Odle-Clarke (11 points, 3-6 from 3) helped provide a spark off the bench, while a pair of incoming transfers from Brock impressed in their Gryphon debuts with Nemanja Sarkanovic (8 pts, 5 ast, 3 stl) and Jalen Janes (13 pts, 6 reb) chipping in nicely for a balanced Gryphon attack.

Game 2 – Saturday, Oct. 24, 2026 | Guelph 60 – Western 81

On Saturday night, the Gryphons were back at it on their home court, but this time were unable to find the rhythm on the offensive end of the floor that saw them break the 100 point plateau 24 hours earlier. The Western Mustangs led by 10 after the 1st quarter, and took an 18-point lead into the 4th. The Gryphons were held to 35.9% shooting from the floor as a team and were 5-28 from beyond the arc in the loss.

The Gryphons (1-1) will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 31 in Thunder Bay against the Lakehead Thunderwolves (0-1). Lakehead lost their season opener on Saturday, with the Waterloo Warriors escaping Thunder Bay with a 79-75 win on Saturday, Oct. 24.
