Vancouver, BC – Saturday afternoon in Vancouver the Gryphons Men's Basketball team lost 101-80 versus the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) Thunderwolves at the
UBC Preseason Tournament. The Gryphons are now 0-2 at the tournament following a loss on Friday night versus the host UBC Thunderbirds.
The Gryphons got off to a slow start in Saturday's game against UNBC. The Thunderwolves poured in 33 points in the opening quarter and led 33-16 heading to the 2
nd quarter.
The Gryphons were able to turn things around in the 2
nd quarter, outscoring UNBC 24-16. However, the 3
rd quarter was a lot like the 1
st, with the Thunderwolves exploding for 35 points compared to 17 for Guelph. In the end, UNBC was able to ride those big 1
st and 3
rd quarters to a 101-80 victory.
The Gryphons leading scorer was point guard
Daniel Dooley who had 17 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
Drew Walford and
Jean-Leandres Beugre both came off the bench and poured in 14 points apiece. Overall, the Gryphons did an excellent job earning trips to the foul line, finishing the game 29-of-40 from the charity stripe. However, their inability to get stops was the difference as they allowed UNBC to shoot 55% from the floor (37-67) and 48% from beyond (12-25). The Thunderwolves' leading scorers were guards Rhys Elliott (23 pts) and Billy Cheng (20 pts).
The Gryphons will look to end their West Coast trip on a high note on Sunday afternoon when they face the Alberta Golden Bears. Tip off is set for 12:30pm ET.
