Guelph, ON- Thursday night at the W.F. Mitchell Athletics Centre the Gryphons Men's Basketball team defeated the Bishop's Gaiters 74-55 in preseason action. The Gryphons are now 3-5 this preseason.
Despite losing the rebound battle 41-25, the Gryphons managed to build up a sizable lead against the visiting Gaiters. The game looked like it was going to be a close battle early on. Both teams were playing hard on the ball and were only allowing their opponents to shoot just above 30 percent in the first quarter. The Gryphons had a four-point lead at the end of the quarter and were able to maintain the separation until half time.
Five minutes into the second half, the momentum would swing Bishop's way. Jona Bermillo scored two baskets one after the other, for two and three points respectively, tying the game at 39-39. This lit a fire under the Gryphons and their offence went off from there. After the tying basket, Guelph went on a 17-3 run and they were able to take a 12-point lead into the fourth quarter. Their 31.3 field goal percentage and 0-2 from behind the three-point line in the first quarter turned into 64.3 field goal percentage and 6-8 from three-point land in the third.
The fourth quarter was highlighted by a 12-3 run in the last five minutes, extending the Gryphons' lead over the Gaiters to 21 and massive dunks from rookie
Kingslee D'Silva (making up for a missed dunk earlier in the quarter) and
Andrew Grant.
Jonathan Wallace,
Taylor Boers and
Ahmed Haroon all scored in double figures with 14,13 and 12 points respectively.
Daniel Dooley and
Jack Beatty were nursing minor injuries and not in the lineup for the Gryphons.
The Gryphons play their final preseason game on Saturday when they welcome the Victoria Vikes to the W.F. Mitchell Athletics Centre. Tip is set for 3pm. The Gryphons will open the OUA Regular Season portion of their schedule on Friday, November 6 when they head to Thunder Bay to face the Lakehead Thunderwolves.
