WHKY: Gryphons beat UOIT 4-1, move into 2nd in OUA

Box Score
Oshawa, ON - Sunday afternoon in Oshawa, the Gryphons women's hockey team won 4-1 over the University of Ontario Institute of Technology.  With the win, the Gryphons improved to 13-2-3 and moved into second place in the OUA standings.  The UOIT Ridgebacks fall to 6-12-1.

Following a big 3-1 win over the No. 4 Queen's Gaels on Friday (Jan. 23), the Gryphons were trying to avoid a let-down as they traveled to Oshawa on Sunday for an afternoon matchup with UOIT.  Rookie forward Mackenzie Wong (Surrey, BC) would open the scoring with her third goal of the season as the Gryphons led 1-0 after 20 minutes of play.  After the Ridgebacks tied the game at 1-1 in the second period, the Gryphons would answer back with a pair of goals scored just 27 seconds apart.  First, it was OUA All-Star Jessica Pinkerton scoring for the second straight game to make it 2-1 Guelph.  Shortly after Pinkerton had scored her sixth of the season, rookie defenceman Katherine Bailey (Lucan, ON) would score the first OUA goal of her career to put the Gryphons up 3-1 heading to the third period.

Brittany St. James (Orono, ON) would provide the insurance with another goal in the third period, with assists to Pinkerton and Christine Grant, to extend the Gryphons lead to 4-1.  Fifth year captain Katie Mora finished with two assists on the day and with her second assist, recorded the 100th point of her Gryphon career.  Rookie winger Kaitlin Lowy also finished with two assists on the day while Gryphons rookie goalie Valerie Lamenta (Montreal, QC) turned away 14 of the 15 shots sent her way for the win.  Lamenta has done a superb job filling in for All-Star starter Steph Nehring when called upon.  In Lamenta's five starts this season, she has allowed a total of just four goals against.

Up next for the Gryphons, a matchup with the Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday, January 31st at 2pm in Waterloo.  The Gryphons will play a pair of games in Waterloo next weekend, as they are set to visit the Waterloo Warriors on Sunday at 2:30pm.
