Box Score Guelph, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons women's hockey team defeated the Queen's Gaels with an exciting 1-0 final score at the Gryphon Centre on Saturday afternoon. The Gryphons move to 4-1-1, dropping the Gaels to 5-1-2 for their first loss in regulation time on the season.
Brittany St. James (Orono, Ont.) would score the Gryphon's winning goal at 5:19 in the first period of play with Marci Landman (Alma, Ont.) and Gina Murray (Lucknow, Ont.) on the assists. It would be a defensive battle from both teams from that point on.
Despite pulling netminder Caitlyn Lahonen (Sharon, Ont.) in the last minute of play and grabbing a man advantage at 19:56 after Gryphon player Katherine Bailey (Lucan, Ont.) was called for body checking, traffic in front of the net would keep the Gaels from tying up the game and the Gryphons would remain undefeated on home ice after their third home win of the season.
Stephanie Nehring made 16 saves on the game, and the Gryphon team would tally up 25 shots on Lahonen. After the game, assistant coach Scott McMillan said it was a "Complete effort from the whole team for 60 minutes. Queens is a really good team, it takes 60 minutes of effort to beat them. We need to be led by our leaders, and tonight we were. Both goalies were great. Steph lead the way for us tonight. And our veteran players were outstanding."
The Gryphons will hit the ice again on Sunday November 9
th at the Gryphon Centre against the UOIT Ridgebacks with the puck set to drop at 2:00 p.m.
