GUELPH, Ont. (November 22, 2013) - The Guelph Gryphon's men's basketball team lost to the visiting CIS No. 6 Ryerson Rams 81-68 on Friday night at the W.F. Mitchell Centre.

Jack Beatty led the way for the Gryphon's with 13 points and five rebounds, while Michel Clark had 11 points and two assists.

Jahmal Jones led all scorers with 35 points, five assists, and four rebounds for the Ryerson Rams.

The Gryphon's took an early lead in the first quarter, hitting a few mid range jump shots. However, the Rams were unfazed by the early deficit. The Rams jacked up a lot of three-pointers early but failed to sink any, as Guelph held them to 0-7 from beyond the arc. The veteran presence of Yannick Walcott helped the Rams maintain their composure despite their early struggles. Two straight offensive turnovers by the Gryphon's gave the Rams ample opportunity to get back into the contest. The quarter ended with the Rams up 22-13, Trevor Thompson lead all Gryphon scorers with five points.

The Gryphon's battled hard in the second to cut the deficit. Multiple Gryphon players chipped in offensively, including four points and four boards from Jack Beatty. Defensively Guelph battled hard against the Rams players, allowing only 14 points against in the second. At the half Guelph shot 32% from the field (9-28), trailing Ryerson 36-28.

Down eight to open the second half the Gryphon's were looking for a big effort to take the lead. Guelph turned to the long ball to spur their offense. A three-pointer from Andrew Grant cut the deficit to seven with 7:34 left in the third quarter. After the Rams rallied to increase their lead to 11, back-to-back three pointers from Zachary Angus and Jack Beatty made it a 5-point contest with 5:30 left to play. After going 0-7 on 3-pointers in the opening half, Guelph managed to hit four 3's in the 3rd quarter alone. Beatty's seven points in the quarter helped the Gryphon's cut the lead to five heading into the final frame.

An early 10-5 run allowed Ryerson to double their lead to 10 to start the final quarter. A Michel Clark 3-pointer made it a 7-point game with 6:00 remaining on the clock. Despite the attempted Gryphon comeback, the Rams never seemed to let their pressure get to them. After the Rams extended the lead to 11, Jahmal Jones nailed a 3-point dagger to solidify the game for Ryerson with less than three minutes remaining in the game. Despite their best efforts to mount a comeback, the Gryphon's came up short, dropping the contest 81-68.

The Gryphon's will hit the court again tomorrow against the University of Toronto Varsity Blues with the ball set to tip-off at 8:00 p.m at the W.F. Mitchell Athletic Centre.
