VICTORIA (CIS) – Two goals from rookie
Crysta Stubbs propelled the University of Guelph 5-0 over the Waterloo Warriors in a rematch of the OUA final on Saturday at the 2013 Field Hockey Canada-CIS national championship hosted at the University of Victoria. The bronze-medal preview played under torrential down pour was the final round-robin game for both teams.
Â
The Gryphons have had the best of Waterloo throughout the season defeating the young Warriors 3-1 in regular season play and 4-1 in the OUA championship game. Despite the score margins Waterloo have no fifth-year players departing for next year's contingency.
Â
Guelph opened the scoring in the second minute of play after All-Canadian
Erin Houle tallied her second goal of the tournament on a penalty corner. The Gryphons capitalized on another corner from
Allison Chute in the 23
rd minute, while Stubbs put an end to any come-back hopes with back-to-back goals in the 34
th and 35
th minute of play. Chute scored Guelph's lone second-half goal as the Gryphons edged the Warriors in penalty corners 17-2.
Â
Waterloo are still on the hunt for their first goal of the tournament and had their best opportunities in this game. Steph Snyder was all over the pitch for the Warriors who generated their first two penalty corners this championship. Despite being able to capitalize strong midfield play from Alana Raymond, also the team's player of the game, showed great offensive potential for the young Waterloo team.
Â
Houle opened scoring in the second minute of play putting in a short-side rebound off Guelph's first penalty corner of the game. The Gryphons had a number of opportunities stymied by Waterloo keeper Nickole LeVear and as such were held off the board until the 23
rd minute. Chute put away a penalty corner rebound again on the short side to give Guelph a 2-0 tilt.
Â
From there Waterloo seemed to match the Guelph pace showing strong a defensive presence around the perimeter of the circle. Unfortunately for Waterloo, two quick goals on almost identical plays allowed Stubbs to give the 4-0 lead entering the break.
Â
In the second half the Warriors held the Gryphons to a one-goal half after Chute capitalized on a broken-down corner. The slow pull out resulted in a quick give-and-go at the top of the circle between
Amy Wise and Houle. Houle's shot was then collected by Chute, who curled and slotted the ball for the Gryphon's fifth and final goal.
Â
Waterloo mustered two corners in the late get-going and had a few opportunities taken away from them thanks to solid play from Guelph net minder
Kaye McLagan.
Â
Guelph's 5-0 win means little in the standings as tomorrow's bronze-medal match will begin with a clean sheet for both teams. Both teams will face off for a medal at 1 p.m., while the Vikes and Thunderbirds have already guaranteed themselves a spot in the championship final.Â
