York - The University of Guelph Gryphons won the 2013 Ontario University Athletics (OUA) field hockey championship with a 4-1 victory over the University of Waterloo Warriors on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 27) at York Stadium.

The title is the team's first since 2010 and fourth overall in program history, and avenges back-to-back silver medals in each of the last two seasons.

"Today we were outstanding from the push back and never let up," said head coach Michelle Turley. "Our passing was dynamic and we dominated the play throughout the entire game. There was no doubt we were going to bring home the title."

The result of the gold medal game was never really in doubt as the Gryphons dominated play throughout the contest. They got on the board first 11 minutes in on a goal byÂ
Crysta Stubbs and extended their lead in the 22nd minute whenÂ
Allison Chute found the back of the net for the 2-0 lead at the half.

Guelph continued to control the pace of the game in the second and added to its lead in the 42nd minute on a goal by Ciara CondonÂ

Jacqui Tonkin rounded out the Gryphons scoring in the 57th minute on a goal off a corner.

Waterloo tallied its only marker of the game just before time expired when Vanessa Guido (Newmarket, Ont.) put the ball in the back of the net in the 69
th minute.

"I am so proud of each and every one of my athletes. They are true champions. We aspire to carry this momentum into the national championships on Thursday." Turley added.

The Gryphons and Warriors also qualified for the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) championships and will compete in the four-team tournament at the University of Victoria Oct. 31 to Nov. 3.
