Gryphons move into sole possession of second place in the OUA

On Sunday, Guelph got off to another very quick start en route to a 4-0 victory over Western. In their first outing with the Mustangs this season, Candice Hawksworth(Oakville, ON)  put the Gryphons on the scoreboard 4 minutes into the contest which transpired from an Amy Wise (Surrey, BC) pass down the line to an open Brittany Seidler (Oliver, BC) who cut to the goal and aimed for the far post. Hawksworth knocked the ball down out of the air and over the line. At the 8-minute mark, Seidler came back hard and stole the ball off her opponent and passed to rookie Ally Chute (Greenfield Park, QC) who found the back of the net to give Guelph a 2-0 lead.

In the second frame, the Gryphons continued to maintain possession and dominate the play but were held at bay. At the 50-minute mark, Seidler scored top shelf on a tip from a well-hit ball through the middle of the circle from Erin Houle (Burlington, ON). Jess Donaldson (Kingston, ON) also recorded an assist. Ten minutes later, Laura Straus (Waterloo, ON) made a well-executed 35-yard hit to Chute who was all alone in the circle and slipped the ball past the Mustang keeper. Left defender Jess Jarrell (Guelph, ON) added the second assist. Final scoreline 4-0 for Guelph. Kaye McLagan (Mitchell, ON) grabbed the shutout.

In their second game of the day, Guelph (competing in their third game of the weekend) lost 3-1 to Toronto (only their second game) despite playing well. The Gryphons earned a number of attacking penalty corners against UofT, did not concede many penalty corners, had a number of good opportunities to capitalize, moved the ball well and often released the ball quickly.

Guelph hit the scoreboard first at the 4-minute mark. Unfortunately, Toronto would retaliate a minute later to knot the contest. With 13 minutes to half-time, the Blues went ahead and would add an insurance marker in the second session for a 3-1 win.

Where the Gryphons struggled was in their transition.

Coach Turley, stated, "Transition is going from attack to defense and defense to attack quicker than your opponent does. If you have two teams that are both skilled and pass the ball well the team that transitions quickly will win the game and Toronto did an excellent job at transitioning from defense to attack. This is how they scored all three of their goals."

Kaye McLagan was outstanding in the cage and saved to UofT strokes.

Rookie, Ally Chute has an exceptional weekend with a 5-point performance (4 goals and 1 assist).

The Gryphons are now 5-1-1 on the season and are in sole possession of second spot in the OUA with 16 points.

Guelph will take a break for Thanksgiving and resume play against Queen's at Downsview Park on October 13th at 10:45 am.
