On Saturday (Sept. 22), the Gryphons' Field Hockey team traveled to the University of Toronto for two afternoon contests, winning both games.
In the first game, the Gryphons pounded the Queen's Golden Gaels 8-0. Guelph dominated for a full 70 minutes. At the 2-minute mark,
Allison Chute (Greenfield Park, QC) was very patient inside Guelph's attacking 25 being sure not to foul, stole the ball off a Queen's defender and made a solid pass to
Brittany Seidler (Oliver, BC) who nailed the far corner of the backboard to put the Gryphs on the scoreboard. As it turned out, this goal was the game winner. Seidler added 4 more for a tally of 5 in the game, 4 in action and 1, a stroke.
Candice Hawksworth (Oakville, ON) recorded a hat-trick. "Today, the playing surface was conducive to our style of play," said Coach Turley. "We were able to hit the ball well with pace and showcase our stick skills. However, our tackling skills need improvement."
The second game saw the Gryphs shutout McGill by a score of 6-0 but only led by one in the first frame. They were playing as individuals, ball watching and did not always have a plan.
Daniela Jelec (Mississauga, ON) scored her first league marker as a Gryphon as
Erin Houle (Burlington, ON) found her on the far post on a penalty corner. Seidler added two for a 3-0 lead at the break. Fortunately, Guelph's play greatly improved in the second half. "We hit the ball with a purpose and improved on our lateral passing across the field," said Turley about their second game.  Ally Chute, Seidler and Hawksworth all found the back of the net. It marked Seidler's second hat-trick of the day.
Next weekend, the Gryphs play at home:
