The Guelph Gryphons dropped their second straight game of the weekend to the CIS No. 2 Lakehead Thunderwolves tonight in Thunder Bay. The game finished with a score of 88-67 in the Thunderwolves favour in the last regular season game on the OUA schedule.
The Gryphons finish the regular season with a 8-14 record and qualify for the post-season. Guelph and Wester finished the regular season tied for the sixth and final playoff spot in the West Division with matching 8-14 records. The tie-breaker goes to the Gryphons because of point differential, Guelph beat Western 82-66, while Western defeated Guelph by a smaller margin of 69-66.
The sixth seeded Gryphons will travel to play the third seeded Laurier Golden Hawks this week in an OUA West quarterfinal game. Playoff dates and times are yet to be determined.
The Thunderwolves finished with their best ever OUA West record 20-2 in 13 years.
Lakehead and Guelph came out looking to finish their seasons strong, with Guelph anxious to qualify for playoffs, and the T-Wolves looking for another game of solid play and preparation for playoffs.
Ryan Thomson led the 'Wolves with 22 points and Matt Schmidt had a season-high 19 points ant 3 rebounds. Venzal Russell had 18 points with 5 assists and 3 steals. Greg Carter had an impressive 8-8-8 line in points, assists and rebounds.
Dan McCarthy led the Gryphons with 19 points and five rebounds while Aron Campbell was the only other Gryphon scoring double digits with 13 points and six assits.
