GUELPH, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphons men's basketball team toppled the Queen's Gaels 83-73 tonight (Nov. 17) in their home opener at the W.F. Mitchell Center.  The Gryphons earned their first victory of the regular season and move to 1-2 on the season.

Zachary Angus (Burlington, Ont) took charge with a game-high 21 points to lead the Gryphons to their first victory of the season.  Michel Clark (Burlington, Ont) followed closely behind with 20 points after shooting 5-for-6 from three point range.

The Gaels were led by Greg Faulker (Kingston, Ont) who raked in 17 points on the night with seven additional rebounds.

The Gryphons wasted no time in jumping on Queen's miscues to open up an early nine-point streak to establish an early 9-2 lead.  The Gaels were able to find some defensive rhythm to swing the ball into Gryphon territory to tie the game up at 13 to round out the quarter.

Early Gryphon mishaps following Thomas Armstrong (Ottawa, Ont) departure from the game cost them the lead as Queen's opened a string of plays to leap ahead to a 20-15 lead.  While the Gryphons offence remained persistent, they were unable to establish any consistency until the dying minutes where Michel Clark lit up by shooting 4-of-5 from three to regain a 37-33 lead going into half.

The Gryphons were able to maintain the lead throughout the half after an early buzzer-beater by Stefan Cornelissen (Aylmer, Ont) from three to establish the Gryphon tempo for the remainder of the night.  Despite a crumbling effort in rebounding the ball, Gryphon dominance from three kept them in control of the game to end the quarter ahead by two.

Michel Clark kept his streak alive with an early three, quickly followed by Zach Angus' own shot from downtown to build an early 10-point lead. Defensive rebounds kept the ball out of Gaels hands to feed the ball to Daniel Thompson (Oakville, Ont) who established his presence at the line by going 6-6 to put the game just out of reach for the Gaels as the clock wound down with the score 83-73 for Guelph.

The Gryphons hope to build on tonight's success as they travel to Ottawa to take on the Ottawa Gee Gees next Friday (Nov. 23) and the Carleton Ravens on Saturday (Nov. 24).  Game time for both is set to start at 8:00 pm.
