The Guelph Gryphon men's basketball team picked up their first victory of 2012 with an 82-66 win over the Western Mustangs tonight in London.
Guelph weathered a second half comeback attempt by Western to hold onto the victory and move to 6-5 on the season. Meanwhile the Mustangs drop to 3-8.
The Gryphons outmuscled the Mustangs under the glass, grabbing 17 offensive rebounds, resulting in 13 second chance points.
The contest remained close through the first quarter, with Guelph holding only a one point edge. The Gryphons took advantage during the second half when Mustang turnovers and Guelph's offensive rebounds became too much to surmount. The Mustangs would launch a late comeback attempt, inching into nine points of the Gryphons , but Guelph responded with three straight foul shots to stretch the lead back into double digits.
Leading the charge for the Gryphons was
Daniel McCarthy (Guelph, Ont.) who charted a team-high 23 points and also pulled down nine rebounds, seven of them defensive.
Kareem Malcolm (Guelph, Ont.) scored 21 points while
Zachary Angus (Burlington, Ont.) chipped in 16 points against his former team.
