Malcolm Returns Home; Lays In Game Winner over Golden Hawks

Guelph's #11 Kareem Malcolm returns to lineup after injury

Feb. 9: Guelph 73 – Laurier 72
GUELPH – Kareem Malcolm's (Brampton, Ont.) returned home Wednesday night was a memorable one, as his lay-in basket with 18 seconds remaining gave the Guelph Gryphons a 73-72 victory over the visiting Laurier Golden Hawks. With the victory the Gryphons move to 8-11, while the Golden Hawks fall to 12-7.

The Gryphons were led by Michael Petrella's (Brantford, Ont.) 20 points, going an impressive 8-10 from the free throw line. Dan McCarthy (Guelph, Ont.) added 14 points while grabbing nine rebounds, and Jerald Greenidge (Brampton, Ont.) scored 12 with eight rebounds.

The Golden Hawks were led by Maxwell Allin's game high 23 points, along with his game high 12 rebounds. Kale Harrison added 13 in a losing effort.

The Gryphon's stormed out to an early 14-2 lead, shooting 60% from the field. McCarthy led a balanced scoring attack, netting six in the opening frame. The Gryphon's led 20-13 after one.

The second quarter was even between both teams, with neither team able to take advantage. McCarthy led all scorers at halftime with eight points, with Petrella adding seven.

The third saw the Hawks storm back, as Allin caught fire, netting 11 in the quarter. The Gryphons were able to hold a slight 56-54 advantage after three, with both teams trading leads.

The final quarter saw both teams trading baskets, and neither team was able to put any separation between the two. A layup by Petrella put the Gryphons ahead two, but was immediately answered by an Allin three to put the Hawks ahead one. That's when Malcolm played hero, netting the game winning layup to give the Gryphon's their final lead. A tough defensive stance by the Gryphon's saw the Hawks final attempt fall short.

The Gryphon's will hope to keep their momentum rolling when they host the McMaster Marauders this Saturday at the W.F. Mitchell Centre. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
