The Gryphons field hockey team went 2-0 this past weekend, meeting the McGill Martlets Saturday (Oct. 1) and the Western Mustangs this afternoon (Oct. 2).

The Gryphons field hockey team advances to 6-1and are currently sitting in second place in the OUA standings.

In their first meeting of the season against McGill, the Gryphons ousted the Martlets 5-2. McGill had the upper hand four minutes into the contest as they scored on a penalty corner that was deflected off a Gryphon stick. Brit Seidler (Oliver, BC) netted the equalizer at 22:00 and at the break, the score remained deadlocked at 1-1. The Gryphons possessed the ball for the entire second frame. Amy Wise (Surrey, BC) scored with a sniper from the top of the circle at 43:00 to put the Gryphs ahead by one. Six minutes later, Wise added her second marker of the game, and of the season, which would be the game winner. At 56:00, Seidler dangled several McGill players deep in the end zone found herself on the baseline with no angle and laid the ball off to an open Candice Hawksworth (Oakville, ON) to increase the gap to 4-1.

McGill retaliated with five minutes to go to narrow the margin but Seidler connected on a penalty corner with no time on the clock for the 5-2 Gryphon victory.

This afternoon, the red, black and gold blanked Western 3-0. All three Gryphon goals were converted on penalty corners. Amy Wise scored her 3rd goal in two days for a hat trick on the weekend and the 2nd game winner in two days. Erica Baxter assisted (Kitchener, ON). Brit Seidler added the insurance marker off a drag flick high into the mesh. Seidler scored  her fifth of the weekend off a perfect execution on a penalty corner to put the Gryphs in front 3-0 for the final result. Rookie Erin Houle (Burlington, ON) notched 2 assists while rookie Laura Straus (Waterloo, ON) added a single. Goalkeeper Kaye McLagan (Mitchell, ON) made a few keys saves and quality decisions to go unscathed and earn her 2nd shutout in league play.

"Today, we played our best hockey of the season. We dumped the ball to the open spaces, made good choice selections and passed very well," said Coach Turley. "A few of the newer athletes - rookie defender Shannon Killip (Burlington, Ont.), and forwards Erica Baxter, a sophomore, and rookie Candice Hawksworth - came into their own this weekend. Alison Little (Toronto, Ont.) played very well in the midfield with excellent ball distribution but everyone had great performances."

Next up for the Guelph Gryphons is the York Lions at Western on Friday, October 7th.
