The Gryphons Men's Rugby Team opened their 2010/2011 season with a road trip to Hamilton to take on the perennially tough McMaster Marauders and dropped the game 26-5.
With the addition of some new recruits in the lineup and some solid veteran leadership, the Gryphons were still not able to upset the Marauders and were handed a 26 to 5 loss. The lone Gryphon scorer was Thomas Sobotka with a try early in the first half.
The Gryphons were looking to play spoiler against a Marauders team that had graduated some of their key players and are also under new leadership with a new head coach. Right from the start of the game the Gryphons began playing their style of hard nose defense and quick play offense. After only 16 minutes of back and forth action between the two teams, winger Thomas Sobotka was able to grubber kick the ball into the Marauders goal area and punched on it touching it down for the try. Even though the Gryphons put the Marauder defense under pressure numerous times, they were unable to capitalize and did not score any more points in the game.
The Gryphon defense was strong for the majority of the game and only when there was a pause in their focus was McMaster able to score. In all, the Gryphons gave up four tries, three of which were converted. With some new players in key roles and a couple key veterans still recovering from injury, the Gryphons started the season well. The team goal is to make the playoffs, hopefully in one of the top four spots so a home playoff game can be hosted on the new Varsity Field.
