Nov. 12: Guelph 78 – Queens 71
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphon men's basketball team earned an impressive 78-71 win over the Queens Gaels on Friday night in Guelph. The Gryphons move to 1-2 on the season.
The one-two combination of Jonathan Moscatelli and Dan McCarthy will surely be on every opponent's radar this upcoming basketball season. Friday night's game was just a small sample of what can be expected from the two veteran players.
Moscatelli (Toronto) lead the Gryphons with 20 points, going an impressive 10-10 from the free-throw line, while McCarthy (Guelph) netted 19 to go along with a game high nine rebounds. Jerald Greenidge (Brampton) added 16 in an impressive effort in his first home game as a Gryphon.
Queen's was led by Dan Bannister (Newmarket) who scored a game high 26 points. Alex Weatherill (Hamilton) added 10 off the bench.
The Gryphon's home opener didn't quite begin how they had envisioned, as the Gaels were able to build a 36-31 halftime lead. Moscatelli did his part to keep the Gryphon's close with eight opening quarter points, while McCarthy added seven by halftime.
The third quarter belonged to the Gryphons, as they outscored the Gaels 27-18 to take a four point lead into the fourth. The Gryphons shot 57% in the quarter, compared to only 34% in the first half.
With both teams fighting for the win, the Gryphons turned to McCarthy, who scored seven in the final quarter to help seal the Gryphons victory. Greenidge added a number of key rebounds in the final quarter to keep the Gaels at bay.
Guelph hopes to keep the momentum rolling as they host the visiting RMC squad Saturday afternoon at the W.F. Mitchell Centre. Tipoff is scheduled for 3pm.
