The Gryphons had the opportunity to play at home for the first time in 12 years in front of a large crowd of parents, friends and alumni and what a celebration! Guelph contended with the University of Toronto and downed the Blues with an impressive 4-2 result in a come from behind win to capture top spot in the OUA.
The intensity for both sides was very high and it was a see-saw battle but Guelph controlled the play for most of the contest. With 3 minutes to halftime, Toronto was awarded a penalty stroke and capitalized to take a 1-0 lead into the break. The Blues' goal ignited the Gryphons even more and the red, black and gold would even the score at the 40-minute mark. Kate Dellandrea (Rockwood, ON) outhustled her opponent with exceptional speed to earn a penalty corner. Amy Wise (Delta, BC) was relentless on the left side of the Blues' net scoring in the air off a Brittany Seidler (Oliver, BC) rebound. Seven minutes later, Brienne Stairs (Kitchener, ON) made several brilliant moves and Seidler scored from her knees on a scrimmage in front of the net to put Guelph ahead 2-1. At the 60-minute mark, Dellandrea hit the back of the net on a penalty corner pull out assisted by Lauren Goodmanson (Victoria, BC) and Tegan Stairs (Kitchener, ON) for a 3-1 lead. Unfortunately, the Gryphons had a breakdown and Toronto closed the gap 3-2. With 1 minute on the clock, Brienne Stairs stole a ball off a Blues' free hit deep in their end and eliminated the goalkeeper for the insurance marker and a 4-2 decisive victory.
Every Gryphon athlete played a critical role in the win but Jess Jarrell (Guelph, ON) and Samantha Anderson (Surrey, BC) had stupendous performances in the backfield.
Five hours later, the Gryphons blanked the Carleton Ravens 6-0. It took 20 minutes for Guelph to hit the scoreboard as Brienne Stairs scored on a give and go penalty corner play with Courtney Lacey (Guelph, ON). Wise scored the insurance goal just before the half on a Goodmanson rebound for a 2-0 advantage at halftime.
In the second frame, off Carleton's push back, Guelph stole the ball and made 4 continuous passes before Erica Baxter (Kitchener, ON) put the ball over the goal line to go in front by 3. Brienne Stairs would record a hat trick and her 4
