Gryphons Rebound After First Loss

On Saturday (Oct. 16), the Gryphons suffered their first loss of the season to Toronto 3-1.

Despite the fact that Guelph hit the scoreboard first on a penalty corner goal by Brienne Stairs (Kitchener, ON) assisted by Amy Wise (Delta, BC), the Gryphs did not bring their "A-game" to the pitch today. Toronto retaliated at the 20 minute mark to even the score. At the break, the score remained tied at 1 apiece. Unfortunately, Toronto was usually first to the ball and when the Gryphons did manage to steal the ball off their opponent, they couldn't seem to string together 3 consecutive passes. As a result, the Blues went ahead early in the second half. In the final minutes, Guelph pushed their entire 11 up the field in an attempt to find the equalizer and in the process the Blues eked out an insurance goal with 1 minute on the clock. Final result: Guelph 1, Toronto 3. Jess Jarrell and Courtney Lacey both hailing from Guelph played exceptionally well on defence.

In their second match of the day, the Gryphons utilized the loss as motivation to ensure they would not make the same mistakes twice and McGill had to endure its impact. Brienne Stairs struck first in the first minute of play and Brittany Seidler (Oliver, BC) recorded the go ahead marker 3 minutes later. By the half, Seidler had recorded a hat trick and by the final whistle she amassed a total of 5 in the game en route to an 8-0 romping over the Martlets. Tegan Stairs also added a single and Courtney Lacey nailed a stroke to the back of the cage. Kaye McLagan secured the shutout.

Guelph leads the charts in the goals for category with 73 and sports an 11-1-0 record on the season with 2 league games remaining and is tied for top spot in the OUA.
