Thanks-given for 2 More Wins

On Saturday the Gryphon field hockey team fought not only the opposition but the turf as well to go 2-0 with wins over Western and Waterloo. Guelph's strengths are in their ball handling and passing skills but struggled with the surface at St. David's in Waterloo as it brings parity to the competition.

In their first game against Western. Guelph hit the scoreboard in the first 20 seconds as Brienne Stairs (Kitchener, ON) stole the ball off Western's push back, caught the defence off guard and found the back of the net. Unfortunately, the feisty Mustangs did not let down. They rebounded  to even the score on a penalty corner not more than five minutes later. From that point forward, the Gryphs continued to score three more times and the Mustangs responded with the exception of the last marker. As a result, the red, black and gold prevailed 4-3. Brienne Stairs and Brittany Seidler (Oliver, BC) connected for two goals apiece.

Two hours later, Guelph faced the home side and was a little more accustomed to the extremely slow and bouncy surface blanking the Waterloo Warriors 3-0. The entire defensive unit was stellar and rarely allowed the ball beyond their 25 yard-line despite the loss of sweeper Lauren Goodman son (Victoria, BC) due to injury. Captain and centre defender Courtney Lacey (Guelph, ON) was brilliant in the backfield with exceptional tackles, strong passes and great stick work. Brienne Stairs recorded three Guelph markers for her 5th on the day and 23nd of the season.

The Gryphs now sport a 10-0 record with 4 league games remaining.
