University of Guelph Athletics

The University of Guelph was represented on the podium at the 2016 CIS Swimming Championships a total of three times over the weekend in Quebec City. Fourth year swimmer Evan Van Moerkerke was responsible for all three.

For the past four years, Evan has been the king of the pool at the provincial level in the 100m freestyle. After his performance Sunday in Quebec City, his reign has now officially spread country-wide. Van Moerkerke took home gold on Sunday in the men's 100m freestyle. For Van Moerkerke, a four-time gold medalist in the 100m free at the OUA level, this marks his first gold at the national level in his signature event. It also marked his third medal of the three day event.

In his three previous trips to the CIS Championships, the Tillsonburg native had claimed bronze twice as well as silver a year ago in the 100m freestyle. If his performance during Sunday's preliminaries was any indication, then you had the feeling that 2016 may be the year he took that one last step up the podium. Evan broke his own school record and finished first in the prelims with a time of 48.74, Van Moerkerke then posted a time of 50.84 to take top spot on the podium and earn the title of First Team All-Canadian.

Van Moerkerke also broke school records in the men's 50m breaststroke and 200m freestyle events.
