Cal Wigston

The 2024-25 campaign marks Cal Wigston's 19th season as head coach of the men's volleyball program at the University of Guelph. Prior to taking over head coach duties, Coach Wigston served as an assistant coach with the Gryphons from 1998 to 2006. During the 2023-24 season, Cal led the Gryphons men's volleyball team to one of the greatest seasons in program history, with the team setting a single-season record for wins after posting a 15-5 record during the regular season, which was followed by an OUA bronze medal finish in the conference playoffs which helped the Gryphons return to the U SPORTS Men's Volleyball Championship tournament for the first time in 36 years. Cal Wigston was named OUA Coach of the Year during the 2023-24 season, making him just the second University of Guelph men's volleyball head coach to earn OUA Coach of the Year honours, joining Doug Dodd who won the award on two occasions in 2002-03 and 1997-98. Since taking over the head coaching duties in 2006-07, Cal has helped the Gryphons men's volleyball program produce 25 OUA All-Stars and 4 U SPORTS All-Canadians, including Jonathan Pickett, who was twice named a U SPORTS Second Team All-Canadian (2021-22 & 2023-24).

Outside of the OUA, he has also had extensive experience coaching the U-21 men in the Ontario Volleyball Association. Under Coach Wigston's leadership, the Guelph Gryphon Junior Men’s Club team has captured 4 gold and 2 silver medals in eight years at the provincial championships. At the 2002 national championships, his team defeated Manitoba to capture the bronze medal. Coach Wigston, who is an NCCP Level II-certified coach, was also voted Ontario Volleyball Coach of the Year in 2004. He and his wife, Sue, have 3 children, Brady, Kaj and Emma.
