In 2017, Gary Jeffries returns for his second season with the Gryphons after also serving as an assistant coach during the 2016 campaign.
Coach Jeff's illustrious coaching career spans five different decades, including 35 years on the coaching staff with the Laurier Golden Hawks. Gary served as head coach of the Laurier football program from 2003 to 2012, earning the honour of CIS Coach of the Year in 2003. During his tenure as head coach at Laurier, Gary led the Golden Hawks to a pair of Yates Cup titles (2004 & 2005) as well as a Vanier Cup title in 2005.
Gary has been named OUA Coach of the Year on four different occasions (2003, 2004, 2005 & 2009) and also spent one season as an assistant coach with the McMaster Marauders (2013).
Coach Jeff is a former University of Guelph student himself and suited up as a defensive back for U of G's football team for a pair of seasons in the late 1960's. During the 1967-68 season, Gary was named the University of Guelph's Athlete of the Year. Gary also played professional baseball in the Detroit Tigers system from 1966-1969 and went on to play football at Laurier from 1970-1972. He was drafted by the Toronto Argonauts in 1972 and then signed with the Hamilton Tiger Cats in 1973. In 2016 he was recently inducted into the Burlington Sports Hall of Fame. Gary is married to his wife Jill and has four children and seven grandchildren.
