OTTAWA, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons football team left the nation's capital with a memorable 31-28 victory over the previously undefeated and No. 10-ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees. With the win, the Gryphons improve to 2-2 on the season, while the Gee-Gees suffer their first loss of 2026 and fall to 3-1.
The Gryphons arrived in Ottawa fresh off of a convincing 60-15 victory over the Carleton Ravens, and the U of G offence was able to make some more big plays in their Week 4 trip to Gee-Gees Field. Gryphons fourth-year quarterback,
Tristan Aboud, would help lead the way on a pair of key second touchdowns in the 3rd quarter. Aboud would account for his first touchdown of the day using his legs to run it in from 5-yards out to give Guelph a 17-10 lead. Late in the 3rd quarter, Aboud would complete big plays through the air, with
Dante Law and
Willem Arseneau both making key receptions on a touchdown drive capped off by
Kanye Nethersole, who was wide open in the endzone on a 12-yard touchdown reception to give Guelph a 24-13 lead late in the 3rd quarter.
In the 4th quarter, the Gryphons scoring would be capped off on a 6-yard touchdown pass from
Tristan Aboud to
Willem Arseneau, pushing Guelph's lead to 31-20. The No. 10-ranked Gee-Gees would storm back late, with Ottawa quarterback Josh Janssen connecting with Robin Collioud for a 26-yard strike with 2:13 remaining to make it a 31-26 game. The Gee-Gees would get the ball back with under a minute to go looking to steal the win, but Gryphons fourth-year defensive back,
Kyle Simon-Guerin (Brampton, ON) would come up with the game-sealing interception, out-leaping a Gee-Gees receiver on a contested ball at the Guelph 2-yard line with just :39 seconds remaining in the game. The Simon-Guerin INT was an exclamation mark on yet another strong performance from the Gryphon defence as a whole, who were up to the challenge against the OUA's leading passer in Gee-Gees quarterback, Josh Janssen. The Gryphons would concede a safety late, but would hold on from there, leaving Ottawa with a hard-fought 31-28 victory. Saturday's game in Ottawa also marked the return of Gryphons fourth-year quarterback,
Marshall McCray, who had missed the team's previous two games due to injury. The dynamic, dual-threat QB accounted for his team's first touchdown of the game, extending the ball across the goal line for a 1-yard touchdown run late in the 1st quarter.
