GUELPH, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons football team (1-2) fresh off their first win of the season, will head to the nation's capital on Saturday, September 19 to take on the undefeated and No. 10-ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees (3-0) from Gee-Gees Field. The Gryphons (1-2) will head to Ottawa to take on the No. 10-ranked team in the country in the Ottawa Gee-Gees (3-0), one of the four remaining undefeated teams in the OUA. The Gryphons
earned their first win of the season in convincing fashion on Saturday (Sept. 12) defeating the Carleton Ravens 60-15, while the Gee-Gees are fresh off an impressive road win after going into Waterloo and knocking off the Laurier Golden Hawks, 20-18.
Ottawa is led by Josh Janssen who has been one of the top quarterbacks in the OUA this season. Janssen currently leads the conference with 976 passing yards, a 73.5 completion percentage and is 2nd with 7 touchdowns thrown. Janssen was held in check last week by the Laurier defence with 245 passing yards while completing 21 of 31 passes. Gee-Gees receiver Devaughn Blackwood has burst onto the OUA scene and has been a key target in the passing game, catching 7 passes for 119 yards in the win against Laurier. Blackwood for the season is 2nd in the conference with 357 yards, 3rd with 24 receptions and a tied for third with 2 touchdown receptions. Ottawa also boasts the OUA's leading rusher so far this season in Souleymane Camara. Camara leads the conference with 372 rushing yards and had 135 yards on the ground and found the end zone last week. The Gee-Gees offensively averages 470.7 yards per game as they will test the Gryphon defence. Ottawa also has one of the top defences in terms of points allowed, holding their opponents to 16.3 points per game (2nd in OUA) but are middle in the pack in yards allowed, giving up 379.7 yards per game. The Gee-Gees on defence are led by Jaxxon Brashear who is the team's leading tackler with 21 total tackles (4th in OUA).
After an outstanding performance from the Gryphon defence, limiting an explosive Carleton Ravens passing attack to just 269 total passing yards, the Gryphon secondary will be once again tested this week in Ottawa. An experienced trio in the Guelph secondary led by
Nathaniel Slawter,
Kyle Simon-Guerin and
Gianni Green will look to limit Josh Janssen and the Gee-Gees' passing game. The Gryphon defence was bolstered last week by the return of linebacker
Jevaun Jacobsen, who made his season debut after missing the first two games of the season, with Jacobsen finishing the game versus Carleton with 5 total tackles. The Guelph defence has been one of the strengths of the team this season, allowing 22.7 points per game (5th in OUA) and 372.7 yards per game (4th in OUA). The Gryphon offence got on track in a big way against the Ravens in Week 3, generating a season-high 637 yards of offence.
Tristan Aboud in the win completed 19 of 24 passes for 341 yards and threw for 4 touchdowns. Aboud last week passed Jazz Lindsey for 2nd in school history in total offensive yards in a career (7,177) and passing yards in a career (6,314). Standout sophomore
Ethan Garwe has emerged at receiver for the Gryphons this season, leading the team with 5 receptions against the Ravens for 80 yards. On the season, Garwe currently leads the team with 12 receptions for 246 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Willem Arseneau moved into 10th of all-time in the Gryphon record books for receiving yards in a career with 1,606 yards after going over the century mark last week in the win over Carleton. Gryphons fourth-year running back,
Caleb Sargeant, continues to be an explosive option in the run game for Guelph. Sargeant is 3rd in the OUA with 255 rush yards, averaging 9.4 yards per carry and has rushed for two touchdowns this season.
Anakin Guthrie can become the school's all-time leader in punt return yards on Saturday. Guthrie currently sits at 1,611 punt return yards and needs 212 return yards to pass Ryan Nieuwesteeg's school record mark of 1,822 punt return yards in a career.
The Gryphons and Gee-Gees met last season in Guelph with Ottawa hanging late for the 30-23 win. The last time the Gryphons visited Gee-Gees Field was on September 17, 2022 with Ottawa coming away with the win in that matchup.
