WHKY RECAP: Gryphons Shutout Ridgebacks to Win Series and Advance to McCaw Cup Final

Gryphons also clinch a spot at nationals (March 19-22 in Elmira)

OSHAWA, Ont. – The Gryphons women's hockey team, for the first time since the 2018-19 season, are McCaw Cup and nationals bound. On Friday night (March 6) from the Campus Ice Centre in Oshawa, the Gryphons shutout the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks, 2-0, in Game 2 to sweep the best-of-three OUA semifinal series. Gryphons fifth-year goalie Martina Fedel made 20 saves to earn her second straight shutout as Katy McKenna's shorthanded marker in the 2nd period would prove to be the difference for Guelph, with Maddie Min capping the scoring with a goal early in the 3rd. With the win, the Gryphons advance to the McCaw Cup final (OUA Championship game) and also punch their ticket to nationals, with the 2026 U SPORTS Women's Hockey Championships set to take place March 19-22 in Elmira, Ontario.

It took to the 13:34 mark of the 2nd period for the game's opening goal. With the Gryphons shorthanded, Katy McKenna would break the seal in Game 2 with a perfectly-placed shot, off the crossbar and in, to give the Gryphons a 1-0 lead. Guelph would double their lead in the early stages of the 3rd period when second-year blueliner Maddie Min fired a quick wrister from the point that handcuffed Ridgebacks goalie Zoe McGee and trickled across the goal line to put the Gryphons up by two. That's all fifth-year goalie Martina Fedel would need as she turned aside all 20 shots she saw her way for her second consecutive shutout to secure the 2-0 Game 2 victory and series win. The Gryphons will now keep a close eye on the OUA's other semifinal series, as they will face the winner of the series between the Ottawa Gee-Gees and Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks. The Gee-Gees lead the best-of-three series, 1-0, following their 4-1 Game 1 win in Ottawa. The series now shifts to Waterloo, with Laurier hosting both games at the Pillers Ice Haus from RIM Park. Game 2 is scheduled for Saturday (March 7) at 5pm, and if necessary, Game 3 of the series would take place at 3pm on Sunday afternoon (March 8). Both games can be seen live online on oua.tv. If the Ottawa Gee-Gees win the series, the Gryphons will have home ice for the McCaw Cup. If Laurier wins the series, the Gryphons will be heading to Waterloo next Saturday with the OUA title on the line.
