GUELPH, Ont. – The Gryphons women's volleyball team were back home at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre this weekend as they improve to 8-6 on the season following a weekend sweep over the Lakehead Thunderwolves.

The Gryphons were back home at the GGAC in the first of two matches with the Lakehead Thunderwolves, where they came through with a straight sets victory with the set scores of 25-19, 25-19, 25-18. The hosts were led by
Maia Dan and
Brooke Preszcator in both the attack and serve game. Dan, the fourth year outside hitter led all players with 14 points and 11 kills to go along with 3 aces.
Brooke Preszcator, the second-year middle blocker did all in the victory finishing with match with 12 points, leading the team with 4 aces and had 6 kills and 3 total blocks.
Sophie Sommerfeldt had 34 assists and led the Gryphs with 11 digs. The Gryphon front line had a strong match at the net with 8 total blocks.
Saturday, Jan. 17, 2026 | Balanced Attack Leads Gryphons to Weekend Sweep
On Saturday afternoon, the Gryphons held off a pair of charges from the Thunderwolves to earn the straight sets victory and the weekend sweep with set scores of 25-19, 25-20, 25-22. The Gryphs would withstand a Thunderwolves run in the 2nd set after gaining the early 13-4 lead, scoring the final four points of the set after Lakehead cut the lead down to 21-20.
Maia Dan played a crucial part in the set scoring three of her team's final points in the set to give her side the 2-0 lead. The third set was back-and-forth before the Gryphons won four of the final five points to clinch the victory capped off by
Brooke Preszcator's team high 11th kill of the match. Guelph was dominant in the attacking game, finishing the match with 50 kills to Lakehead's 21. Five Gryphons finished the match in double-digit points led by
Brooke Preszcator's 14 and
Briar Crerar's 11 points. Lexi Nicholson-Clarke,
Maia Dan and
Ainsley Preszcator each had 10 points in the victory.
The Gryphons (8-6) will head back on the road next weekend when they head to Toronto to take on the York Lions for a pair of afternoon matches on Saturday (Jan. 24) and Sunday (Jan. 25).
