WHKY RECAP: Gryphons Split Weekend Road Trip as They Shutout Lions but Fall to Warriors

GUELPH, Ont. – The Gryphons women's hockey team were on the road this weekend for two games as they shutout the York Lions on Friday night (Jan. 16) before falling to the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 17).
 

Friday, Jan. 16, 2026 | Sophie Helfenstein Backstops Gryphons to 2nd Straight Shutout Win
 
Gryphon third-year goalie Sophie Helfenstein continued her fine form as she made 25 saves for her second straight shutout leading the Gryphons to a 3-0 win over York. The molecular biology and genetics major at the U of G recorded her league best 6th shutout of the season for her 9th win in the Guelph net. The Gryphons got out to an 1-0 in the opening period as Jadyn Calder was in front of the net and was able to deflect home the point shot into the back of the York net. The Gryphons would add on to their lead in the middle period with goals from Alexie Oliver and Maddie Min to take a 3-0 lead. Guelph was dominant opening two periods, outshooting the Lions 30-16 as Helfenstein stopped all nine shots in the third for the team's 13th win on the season.
 

Saturday, Jan. 17, 2026 | Gryphons Fall to Warriors in U SPORTS Top 10 Matchup
 
On Saturday afternoon in a matchup between the No. 7-ranked Gryphons and No. 10-ranked Warriors, it would be the Warriors who'd come out on top in a 4-1 win. Guelph opened the scoring midway through the period on Katherine Heard's third goal of the season on the power play. The Warriors would score on the power play with four seconds left in the period on the goal from Tatum James to tie up the game at 1-1. The hosts would take seize momentum in the third period scoring three goals in the period with two goals from Keiara Raitt which gave Waterloo the victory on home ice in a matchup between two nationally ranked teams. Sophie Helfenstein despite seeing her shutout streak come to an end at 139:56, was great in the Gryphon net as she stopped 30 of her 33 shots she faced.
 
The Gryphons (13-2-3) return to the road for two more games when the battle the TMU Bold on Friday night (Jan. 23) in Toronto before make the trip to Kingston for a Saturday afternoon (Jan. 24) matchup with the Queen's Gaels.
