GUELPH, Ont. – The Gryphons men's hockey team played a pair of weekend games, beginning with a Friday night (Jan. 9) home matchup versus the Western Mustangs, followed by a Saturday afternoon (Jan. 10) road game at Brock. After falling just short on Friday night in a 3-2 loss to the Mustangs, the Gryphons bounced back on Saturday in St. Catharines with a 5-4 overtime victory over the Badgers.
Friday, January 9, 2026 | Gryphons Unable to Rally Late in 3-2 Loss to Western
On Friday night, the Gryphons were able to get on the board first as Gio Biondi was able to go coast-to-coast before roofing home his 3rd goal of the season to give Guelph the 1-0 lead early in the 2nd period. However, the visiting Mustangs would score the next three goals of the game including a shorthanded goal from Aiden Preuter at the 8:00 minute mark of the 3rd period to give Western the 3-1 lead. Anthony Tabak scored with :57 seconds left in regulation to get the Gryphons back within one. The Gryphons would push for the equalizer until the dying seconds, with a couple of great chances to tie it up, but were unable to find the tying goal as the Mustangs were able to escape Guelph with the 3-2 victory.
Saturday, January 10, 2026 | Nathan Allensen Scores Overtime Winner for Gryphons in Road Win at Brock
Saturday afternoon (Jan. 10), the Gryphons made the trip to Thorold to take on the Brock Badgers in a pivotal matchup in the OUA West standings for both teams. Guelph, just like they did on the previous night, got out to an early lead with 1st period goals from Gio Biondi and
Dylan Hudon. After the Badgers drew level at 2-2, Guelph added a pair of 2nd period goals from Jack Wismer and Gio Biondi's second goal of the game to restore Guelph's two-goal advantage. Brock would score twice in the 3rd period to tie the game at 4-4 to send the game into overtime. The overtime period was brief and only lasted :44 seconds as
Nathan Allensen was able to sneak around to the side of the net and score the game winner into the open net to give Guelph the 5-4 road victory. The goal from the captain was his 7th on the season and more importantly, two points in the very tight OUA West standings.
Dylan Hudon with a goal and two assists extended his point streak to four games and
Nolan Dann finished the game with four assists as he has 17 helpers on the season.
Cal Schell made 30 saves for his third win of the season. The Gryphons improves their record to 10-6-2 on the season will play a pair of games next week, making the short trip to Waterloo to take on the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks on Thursday night (Jan. 15) before returning home to the Gryphon Centre on Saturday night (Jan. 17) to take on the TMU Bold.
