GUELPH, Ont. – The Gryphons women's rugby team opened up their OUA title defence with a 36-21 win over the Brock Badgers on Saturday afternoon (Aug. 30) from the University of Guelph's Alumni Stadium. Trailing 3-0 in the early stages of the match, the Gryphons quickly settled in scoring two tries in a four minute span. Meg Rogers got the Gryphs on the board in the 9th minute, powering her way in for the team's first try of the season before Lara Jorgensen was able to break through the Badger line and race in for another Guelph try. The Gryphs added on to their lead to make it 19-6 when a perfect pooch kick found landed in the hands of the biological toxicology major, Madelyn Ryan who in stride ran it in for the try. With Guelph near the goal line in the 38th minute, Madison Minnis scored an important try right before the half to give the hosts a 24-13 lead. Guelph would put this one away late with tries from Clara Jackson in the 65th minute and Colleen Wade in the 71st as the Gryphs opened their new campaign with a 36-21 victory. Six tries on the afternoon were scored by six different Gryphons in their season-opening win. The Gryphons (1-0) are back home next week at Varsity Field when they host the McMaster Marauders for a 3:30pm matchup on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 6).
