GUELPH, Ont. – The Gryphons men's volleyball team hosted the Trent Excalibur for a weekend doubleheader in their home opener from the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre as they came away victorious in both matches.
Friday, Nov. 7, 2025 | Gryphons Win First Match of Season in Home Opener
The Gryphons on Friday night played host to Trent in their home opener where they secured their first victory of the season in straight sets with the set scores 26-24, 25-17, 25-19. The first set was back-and-forth as both teams were trading points. The Gryphons would get a kill from
Killian Donovan to give them the 25-24 before an Excalibur error clinched the opening set. Guelph would ride the momentum of the opening set win, winning the next two sets for the 3-0 match win.
Killian Donovan led the way with 18 points, finishing with a game high 15 kills, hitting .433% and also had three aces. The Gryphs hit .353% as a team and second year setter
Tian Harcevic played a major role in that with his 30 assists.
Saturday, Nov. 8, 2025 | Gryphons Win Hard Fought Four Setter for Weekend Sweep
On Saturday night, the Gryphons were tested by the Trent Excalibur as they win the final three sets after dropping the opening set to sweep the weekend doubleheader with the set scores of 23-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-23. Guelph couldn't get off to the start they wanted, trailing 6-2 in the first set as Charlie Winser had three early aces for Trent as Guelph battled back but weren't able to overcome the early deficit. The second set was a different story as the hosts jumped out early winning the first seven points as they'd draw level in the match. With the Gryphons trailing 10-9,
Braeden Sears would step up to the service line and go on his second run of the match from his serve, winning 9 straight points to give his side a 17-10 lead as they go on to win the third set. The fourth set was closely contested as the Gryphons would go to the hot hand to close it out. Third year outside hitter
Cohen Martin closed out the match with back-to-back kills, giving him a match high 20 on the match helping the Gryphons to the four set victory.
Killian Donovan capped off his great weekend with 14 more kills on the match and
Braeden Sears had 12 points in the win as the Guelph native had 9 kills and 4 aces.
The Gryphons (2-2) are back home at the GGAC next weekend when they host the RMC Paladins on Saturday (Nov. 15) and Sunday (Nov. 14).
