WATERLOO, Ont. – An impressive 4th quarter comeback attempt from the Gryphons men's basketball team on Wednesday night (Nov. 26) in Waterloo ultimately fell just short, with the Gryphons losing 78-75 to the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks. Guelph trailed by 14 points (68-54) entering the 4th quarter at Laurier's Athletic Complex, but rallied with a 21-4 run to open the quarter. Leading the way for Guelph on both sides of the ball was
Jack Tunstill, whose lay in with 3:16 remaining gave Guelph a 73-72 lead. Gryphons fourth-year forward,
Eric Armstrong, would add a pair of free throws with 2:35 to go, giving Guelph a 75-72 lead. Unfortunately for the Gryphons, Laurier would close it out down the stretch, with all six of the remaining points scored in the game come from the Golden Hawks at the free throw line, with Laurier going 6-for-6 from the charity stripe in the final minute to escape with the 78-75 win.
Jack Tunstill, a standout guard in his second season as a Gryphon, finished with a game-high 15 points (7-13 from the floor) to go along with 5 rebounds. Tunstill, the U SPORTS leader in steals a season ago, was at it once again on Wednesday night, recording 5 steals and 1 block while leading the way at both ends of the floor for the Gryphons. The Gryphons have six players score in double figures on the night, with
Dylan Koffi (11 points, 3 assists),
Emmanuel Black (11 points) and
Raef Wykes (10 points, 2-for-4 from beyond the arc) all contributing off the bench. The Golden Hawks out-rebounded the Gryphons, 45-to-28 on the night, with Laurier fifth-year forward, Aidan Whalen (Cambridge, ON), leading the way for the Golden Hawks with 24 points and 14 rebounds. With the loss, the Gryphons fall to 5-6 on the season (4th in OUA West), while Laurier improves to 5-5 (3rd in OUA West). Up next for the Gryphons, another crucial OUA West Division matchup on the road, as they travel to the University of Waterloo for a Friday night (Nov. 28) tip versus the Waterloo Warriors (2-7). Friday night's game at the University of Waterloo will be Guelph's final game before the holiday break, with the 2025-26 OUA regular season schedule resuming for the Gryphons in the new year (beginning with a Friday, January 9, 2026 home game versus the undefeated an No. 2-nationally ranked Western Mustangs).
