BASEBALL RECAP: Gryphons Fall Just Short of Reaching OUA Final Four, Fall to Brock in Final of OUA West Regional Qualifier

GUELPH, Ont. – An impressive 2025 season officially came to an end for the Guelph Gryphons baseball team on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 4, 2025) at David E. Hastings Stadium in Guelph. The Gryphons were on the wrong end of a 6-1 score line against the Brock Badgers in the final of the OUA West Regional Qualifier. With the result, the Brock Badgers book a spot in the 2025 OUA Baseball Championship Tournament (Oct. 10-11 at Jack Couch Park in Kitchener – hosted by Waterloo Warriors), while the Gryphons come up just short of earning a spot at the conference championship tournament. It is only the third loss suffered by the Gryphons all season long, with the team finishing 2025 with an outstanding 14-3 overall record.

Round Robin – Game 1 vs McMaster (Friday, Oct. 4) | Guelph 12 – McMaster 4

Serving as hosts of the 2025 OUA West Regional Qualifier, the Gryphons got their postseason off to a strong start with a 12-4 win over McMaster on Friday morning. Sawyer Whitaker collected four hits in five at bats, with the Gryphons scoring eight runs in the sixth inning on the way to victory. Ryan Cooper earned the win for Guelph Gryphons. The southpaw surrendered five hits and four runs (three earned) over eight innings, striking out six and walking three. Guelph amassed 14 hits in the game.

Round Robin – Game 2 vs Brock (Friday, Oct. 3) | Guelph 8 – Brock 7

The Gryphons edged the Brock Badgers, 8-7, on Friday evening to earn a spot in the final of the OUA West Regional Qualifier. Guelph got on the board in the top of the third inning after Evan Ogston doubled, scoring two runs, and Andrew Johnston grounded out, scoring one run. The Gryphons added two more runs in the top of the fourth on a home run to left field by Marco Da Gama. After the Badgers battled back to take a 7-6 lead, the Gryphons answered in the top of the 8th when Jack Gillis doubled to right field, which helped Guelph Gryphons tie the game at 7-7. A hit by a pitch gave the Gryphons the lead, 8-7, in the top of the ninth. Max Rutherford earned the win for Guelph Gryphons. The hurler surrendered zero hits and zero runs over one and one-third innings, striking out three and walking one. Logan Miziolek pitched three and two-thirds innings in relief for Guelph Gryphons. The reliever gave up two hits and three runs while, striking out two and walking three. With the win, the Gryphons earned a spot in Saturday afternoon's final.

Final – OUA West Regional Qualifier (Saturday, Oct. 4) | Guelph 1 – Brock 6

After the Brock Badgers defeated McMaster, 3-0, in the semfinal to earn a spot in the final of the OUA West Regional Qualifier, it would be Guelph taking an early lead in the 3rd inning on a RBI double from Evan Ogston to make it 1-0 Guelph. But it would be all Brock from there, with the Badgers scoring 6 unanswered runs en route to a 6-1 victory and a berth in the OUA Championship Tournament. Badgers starting pitcher, Ryan Facchini, went the distance, striking out 10 while walking just 1 batter.
