WHKY RECAP: Gryphons Split Weekend Home Doubleheader

GUELPH, Ont. - The Gryphons women's hockey team hosted a pair of games over the weekend from the Gryphon Centre Arena against the Western Mustangs (Oct. 24) and Nipissing Lakers (Oct. 25). The Gryphons dropped their first game of the season in their rematch against Western on before bouncing back with an overtime win over Nipissing on Saturday.

Friday, Oct. 24, 2025 - Gryphons Drop First Game of Season to Mustangs

On Friday night, the Guelph Gryphons women's hockey team took an early lead but were unable to withstand a late third period push by the Western Mustangs in their 3-1 loss in the rematch of their meeting 6 days prior where the Gryphs came away with the 4-0 road win. Guelph took the early 1-0 lead, thanks to a power-play goal from Maddie Min at 13:32, assisted by Reese Coffey, which gave the Gryphons the lead halfway through the first period. However, it would be Western who'd rally scoring three goals in the third period  Alyssa Wouda scored 30 seconds into the third to level the match. Kate Suitor would give the vistors the 2-1 lead with her goal at the 12:58 mark of the period and Haylie Kirkpatrick scored the insurance marker 1:46 after the go-ahead goal to give Western a two goal lead as it was enough for the win to hand the Gryphons their first regular season loss. Sophie Helfenstein made 16 saves in the Guelph net while the Gryphons' penalty kill went a perfect three for three.

Saturday, Oct. 25, 2025 - Maeve Sutherland-Case's Scores Overtime Winner to Split Weekend Home Set

The Gryphons bounced back on Saturday night at the Gryphon Centre Arena, the edged the Nipissing Lakers 2–1 in overtime to close out their weekend homestand on a high note. After a defensive battle through two scoreless periods, it would be Nipissing who'd break the deadlock midway through the third when Tahlia Fisher found the back of the net at 8:13. The Gryphons battled as they got the equalizer with under three minutes to play when Deija Houston scored with her backhand into the top corner of the net to tie up the game at 1-1, igniting the home crowd. It didn't take long for Guelph to complete the comeback in overtime when Maeve Sutherland-Case weaved her way through the Lakers defence and buried the game-winner just 14 seconds into overtime, securing the victory for the Gryphons. Martina Fedel was outstanding in net for the Gryphs, turning aside 23 of 24 shots, while Guelph outshot Nipissing 40–24 on the night.

The Gryphons improve to 5-1-0 on the season as they head on the road for a pair of the games this week when they take on the Varsity Blues in Toronto on Thursday night (Oct. 30) before making their way to Oshawa to battle the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks on Saturday (Nov. 1).
