MHKY RECAP: Gryphons Drop Both Games in Home Doubleheader

GUELPH, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons men's hockey team hosted a pair of games this weekend from the Gryphon Centre Arena against the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Friday (Oct. 17) and Windsor Lancers on Saturday (Oct. 18) as the Gryphons suffered two tightly contested losses over the weekend.

Friday, Oct. 17, 2025 | Gryphons Unable to Complete the Comeback in Loss to Lakehead

On Friday night, the Gryphons were able to get out to a quick start as Jack Wismer opened the scoring, five minutes into the game for the hosts. However, it would be the visiting Thunderwolves who'd take control of the game, scoring the next three goals to take a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes. Gryphon starting goalie Olivier Ciarlo did an excellent job of keeping his team in the game making 20 saves on 21 shots in the middle frame to give his team a chance to make a third period comeback. Guelph would get within one on the power play goal from Nathan Allensen. With the extra attacker on the ice, the Gryphs pushed for the game tying goal but Nicolas De Grazia would seal the 4-2 victory for Lakehead with an empty net goal.

Saturday, Oct. 18, 2025 | Gryphons Earn a Point But Fall in Overtime to Lancers

The Gryphons looked to bounce back on Saturday night when they host the Windsor Lancers. It took until the 15:49 mark of the second period for the game's first goal when Logan Linklater opened the scoring for the Lancers. The Gryphons were able to find the equalizer as Jack Wismer got his stick on the Nolan Roberts point shot to deflect it past Windsor goalie Max Donoso for his third goal of the season. Cal Schell did a great job in the third period, stopping all 14 shots as the Gryphons despite being outshot 14-2 in the third, was able to send the game into overtime to earn a point. In the overtime period, it would be Windsor who'd come away with the bonus point and the win as Dylan Schives scores the winner to give the visitors the 2-1 win.

The Gryphons (2-2-1) are back on home ice on Thursday night (Oct. 23) when they host the Toronto Varsity Blues before making the short trip to Waterloo on Friday night (Oct. 24) to take on the Laurier Golden Hawks.
