GUELPH, Ont. – The Gryphons women's hockey team open their season with back-to-back wins on home ice, shutting out the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks 2-0 on Friday night (Oct. 10) from the Gryphon Centre Arena. The opening 40 minutes of the game was tightly contested between the two sides before the Gryphons seized control in early in the third period. It only took Guelph 44 seconds in the third to break the scoreless deadlock on the power play when Jadyn Calder porched herself in front of the net and got her stick on the Arielle MacDonald point shot to deflect it past Ontario Tech's goalie Zoe McGee to give the Gryphs the 1-0 lead. The score would remain there for just 89 seconds when Alexie Oliver won her puck battle to set up Deija Houston as the second year forward fired one home from close range on the one-timer to double the Guelph lead. Third year goalie Sophie Helfenstein was fantastic all night, turning away all 22 shots she saw on the night for her first shutout of the season and her 6^th career OUA shutout. The Gryphons will head on the road for the first time in this season when they make the trip to Windsor to take on the Windsor Lancers next Friday night (Oct. 17).
