GUELPH, Ont. – The Gryphons women's hockey team won their 13
th game of the season on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 25) as they knocked off the visiting TMU Bold 2-1 from the Gryphon Centre Arena.
Katherine Heard's goal midway through the second period proved to be the difference as Guelph moves into a tie for top spot in the OUA West division with a record of 13-4-2 as the Bold drop to 8-11-1.
Penalties would bite Gryphons in the first 10 minutes of the game as they took four penalties leading to the opening goal of the game from the Bold. Ahalya Julien-Medeiros made Guelph pay on the power play when she scored at the 4:37 mark to give TMU the 1-0 lead. Guelph weathered the early storm only giving up the one goal as they settled into the game afterwards.
The Gryphons are able to tie up the game following the five-minute major penalty when
Maeve Sutherland-Case entered the offensive zone with the puck and fired a perfect shot that beat TMU goalie Alexia Stratos low blocker to tie up the game at 1-1. Guelph carried the momentum into the second period as they would find their way in front. With the faceoff in the TMU zone, Jaydn Calder won the draw as
Brielle Caruso found an
open Katherine Heard who roofed home her third goal of the season to give Guelph the 2-1 lead, midway through the period.
The score would remain the same for the third period as the Gryphons got a couple key saves from
Sophie Helfenstein. Guelph did a phenomenal job late in the game preventing the Bold from penetrating their zone in the final minutes of the game as the visitors weren't able to get a shot on the Gryphon net and the Gryphs would come away with the victory. Second year goalie
Sophie Helfenstein was great in the Gryphon making 23 saves in the win, including 12 in the opening period helping lead her team to a win.
The Gryphons travel down to Waterloo tomorrow afternoon when they take on the Waterloo Warriors with the winner claiming the top spot of the OUA West division. Puck drop from the Columbia Icefields is scheduled for 2:30pm and the game can be streamed line on oua.tv.
