TORONTO, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons football team moved to 2-0 on the 2024 season thanks to a convincing 47-10 road win over the University of Toronto Varsity Blues on Sunday night (September 1, 2024) at Varsity Stadium.
The Gryphons, fresh off of an impressive Week 1 win over Carleton on August 24, were able to get off to a strong start in their Week 2 matchup versus the Varsity Blues, with Guelph jumping out to a big lead in the opening quarter of play. Gryphons second-year quarterback
Tristan Aboud (Montreal, QC) was able to connect with senior receiver
Jakob Tomas (Guelph, ON) on a 47-yard touchdown pass for the opening score of the game. Gryphons second-year running back
Caleb Sargeant (Kitchener, ON) stepped up on Sunday night with the absence of standout running back
Donavin Milloy who missed the game due to injury, with Sargeant finding the end zone for a second consecutive week, with his 27-yard touchdown run putting Guelph up 14-0. The Gryphons would extend their lead to 21-0 late in the 1st quarter, with Aboud and Tomas connecting for their second touchdown of the evening, helping the Gryphons take a 23-7 lead into the locker room at halftime.

In the 4th quarter, the Gryphons would put the game away, with Aboud this time getting it done with his legs, scrambling for a 14-yard touchdown to put Guelph up 33-10. The Gryphon defence impressed throughout the night, with
Kyle Simon-Guerin coming up with a late interception on Varsity Blues quarterback Kaleb O'Donoghue. The turnover set up a highlight reel touchdown from Gryphons second-year quarterback,
Marshall McCray, who would hurdle a U of T defender on his way into the endzone to put Guelph up 40-10. McCray would add a short touchdown pass later in the quarter to cap the scoring on the night, with Guelph rolling to a 47-10 victory over the Varsity Blues.
Next up for the Gryphons (2-0), another road trip, this time a short trip to Waterloo to face the No. 5-ranked team in the country in the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (1-0) on Saturday, September 7. Kickoff at Laurier's University Stadium is set for 1pm, with the game broadcast live online at oua.tv.
