WBB RECAP: Gryphons Suffer OUA Quarterfinal Loss at No. 3-ranked Queen’s

KINGSTON, Ont. – Saturday night (Feb. 24) at Queen's University in Kingston, the Guelph Gryphons women's basketball team saw their 2023-24 season end in a 68-51 OUA quarterfinal loss to the No. 3-ranked team in the country in the Queen's Gaels. The Gaels used a strong 3rd quarter, outscoring Guelph 15-6, and out-rebounded Guelph by a 46-27 margin, to advance to the OUA semifinals. In the loss, the Gryphons were led by guard Renee Armstrong, who scored a team-high 16 points on the night, while the Gaels were led by Julia Chadwick, who scored 23 points (10-19 shooting) while grabbing 15 rebounds.

Guelph, after posting a 15-7 record during the regular season, entered the OUA women's basketball playoffs as the No. 7-seed in the 12-team postseason field. A win over the Windsor Lancers on home court on Wednesday night (Feb. 21) meant the Gryphons earned a trip to Kingston to face off against one of the top programs in the country in the Gaels. Queen's posted an 18-4 record during the regular season and entered the OUA playoffs as the No. 2-seed in the conference (behind only the No. 1-nationally ranked, Carleton Ravens). The Gaels, fresh off their opening round bye, looked sharp early and took an 11-point lead into the locker room after a hard-fought opening half of play, before pulling away in the 3rd quarter.

With the win, the Gaels now move on to the OUA semifinals, where they will host the TMU Bold on Wednesday, Feb. 28. The other half of the OUA women's basketball semifinals sees the Carleton Ravens host the Ottawa Gee-Gees.
