ROWING RECAP: Gryphon Women Finish 5th, Men 6th at 2024 Canadian University Rowing Championships

VICTORIA, B.C. – This past weekend (November 2-to-3, 2024), a total of 25 student-athletes represented the Guelph Gryphons at Elk Lake in Victoria, British Columbia to compete in the 2024 Canadian University Rowing Championships, hosted by the University of Victoria Vikes. The Gryphons saw in improvement in the overall team standings from last year's national championships, with the women finishing in 5th (out of 21 schools) and the U of G men placing 6th (out of 21 schools).

The Gryphons sent a women's team of 12 student-athletes, a men's team with 10 student-athletes and 3 coxswains to Victoria for the 2024 rowing national championships. The rowing team saw strong performances from Men's Lightweight 1x, Men's and Women's Lightweight 4+, Women's 2x and Women's 2-, qualifying for the A-finals after a great showing in the time trials. On Sunday, Ceilidh Aho & Megan Livingstone (Women's 2x) competed in the A-finals with a 6th-place finish along with Paige Burns & Mayva Hergel (Women's 2-), Kaitlyn O'Donnell, Lia Snucins, Teyla Vandersloot & Jenna Nicholson (Women's Ltwt 4+) and Connor Wideman, James Rourke, Noah Shew & Kato Camp (Men's Ltwt 4+). Rourke, a fourth-year criminal justice and public policy major, also competed in the Men's Lightweight 1x and had a standout performance finishing in the 5th-place in the A-final with a time of 7:23.05 in a stacked field with plenty of international experience. The Gryphons had a great showing in the B-finals, winning their finals in the Women's Lightweight 1x (Natalie Miners), Women's Lightweight 2x (Miners & Lia Snucins) and Men's 2- (Logan Baird & Edward Vander Wilp). The 5th-place finish for the women's side marks an improvement from last year's 6th-place finish, while the men's 6th-place finish is their best finish at the Canadian University Rowing since 2019.
