WHKY RECAP: Alexie Olivier Scores with 5 Seconds Left to Complete Gryphons 3-2 Comeback Win

GUELPH, Ont. – On Saturday afternoon (Nov. 30), the Gryphons women's hockey team pulled off an incredible third period comeback, erasing a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Western Mustangs 3-2 in regulation. Guelph scored three goals in under seven minutes including the game winner from Alexie Olivier with 5 seconds left in the game to complete the comeback in dramatic fashion. With the win, the Gryphons improve to 9-4-1 (wins-losses-OTL/SOL) while the Mustangs drop to 6-8-1 on the season.

The start to the game wasn't what the Gryphons were hoping coming off a tough loss on Thursday night (Nov. 28) as Haylie Kirkpatrick scored 26 seconds into the game to give Western the early lead. The visitors would double their lead later in the first period as Madelaine DesRosiers fired a perfect shot past Martina Fedel's blocker to go up by two goals.

The score would remain the same until 12:58 mark in the third period when the Gryphons would begin their comeback. The captain of the team, Jaime Magoffin would get her team on the board on the power play as she crashed the net and scored her second goal of the season to cut the deficit in half. The Gryphons still trailing 2-1 pulled the goalie for the extra attacker late in the game as they would recreate magic from their game on Thursday night. With under a minute left, Meghan Chittick's point shot takes a deflection off Jaime Magoffin, off the post, off the left pad of Ella Brabrook and right onto the stick of Chihiro Suzuki who buries it into the open net to tie up the game at 2-2 with 51 seconds left.

With time winding down in the third period and the game destined for overtime, the Gryphons would find just a little bit more magic in regulation. Teghan MacRae with seconds left in the game, fired a point shot which finds the stick of Alexie Olivier as the deflection goes under the crossbar, into the back of the net and out of the net as to put the Gryphons in front for the first time of the game with five seconds left to complete the comeback. The goal was the third of the season for the Olivier, the third year forward from Sudbury, Ontario that capped off a dramatic victory for the hosts.

The Gryphons will now head into the winter break with a 9-4-1 record as they'll be back in action on January 10, 2025 when they take to ice at the Gryphon Centre Arena in a matchup against the Brock Badgers.
